A terraced lot is really several small jobs stacked together
Plenty of Forest Hills properties, especially along the steeper stretches near Hillsboro Pike, were built with the yard cut into two or three flat pads connected by short retaining walls rather than left as one continuous slope. That layout is easier to live on than a raw hillside - flat ground for a patio, a garden bed, a play area - but it complicates a stump job considerably, since the machine has to be repositioned level by level rather than working one continuous grade the way it would on an unterraced slope.
Homeowners describing a terraced yard over the phone sometimes underestimate how much that structure changes the job, mentioning the stump's size and location without realizing that which terrace it sits on, and how the machine gets there, matters just as much to how the visit runs. Getting that detail right up front saves everyone a wasted trip, since a machine that shows up expecting flat access can't simply improvise its way onto a terrace it wasn't sized or staged for.
Getting the machine onto the right level in the first place
Before anything else, we figure out which terrace the stump sits on and whether the machine can reach that level directly from the driveway or needs to be walked down or up a connecting stair or ramp between pads. A stump on the lowest terrace of a three-level yard sometimes means routing equipment around the side of the property entirely rather than trying to lower it wall to wall through the middle, especially if the connecting steps between levels weren't built wide enough for anything but foot traffic.
We map this out on the initial call or during a site visit rather than assuming the most direct-looking path on a photo is actually usable, since a set of narrow garden steps that look fine for people can be completely unworkable for a machine with any real width to it. A quick round of photos from the homeowner, showing each connecting stair or ramp between levels, usually tells us everything we need before we ever load the trailer.
Every wall between the road and the stump gets its own clearance check
On a single-slope hillside lot, we set one clearance line near a retaining wall and hold it for the whole job. On a terraced yard with two or three walls between the entry point and the stump, each wall gets checked separately as the machine passes it, since a wall on the upper terrace might be in solid shape and fine to work close to, while one lower down is older, less structurally certain, or simply narrower at its base and less able to take any pressure at all.
Treating every wall on a property the same, rather than checking each one individually before the machine gets anywhere near it, is exactly the kind of shortcut that causes real damage on this kind of lot - and it's damage that's expensive and slow to repair correctly once a wall's integrity has been compromised. We'd rather add a few extra minutes checking a wall that turns out to be perfectly sound than skip that step once and find out the hard way that it wasn't.
Cleanup has to respect the terrace boundaries too
Grindings on a terraced yard don't drain the way they would on an open slope - a pile left near the edge of one terrace can spill over onto the pad below rather than washing gradually downhill the way it might on unterraced ground, concentrating a mess in one spot instead of spreading it thin. We keep cleanup contained to the terrace the stump was actually on unless hauling is the better call, rather than letting loose material migrate down onto a lower level and become someone else's problem, even when that lower level is the same property and the same homeowner.
It's a small detail that's easy to overlook until it happens once, and after that it's not something we're willing to risk again on a yard built in levels. A quick conversation about which terrace can absorb extra material, or whether hauling makes more sense than spreading anywhere on the property, heads off that kind of spillover before it happens.
