Our Stump Grinding Process in Forest Hills
The steps are the same four every time, but on a hillside lot two of them take a lot longer than they would on flat ground.
Reading the lot before the machine ever comes off the trailer
The first thing that happens on site isn't grinding, it's a walk. I look at where the stump sits relative to any retaining wall - above it, below it, or far enough away that the wall isn't a factor at all - because that single detail changes how close I'll let the machine work and from which direction. I check the driveway's grade and turn radius against the machine I brought, and if it doesn't fit, that gets sorted before anything is unloaded rather than mid-job. On a terraced yard with more than one level, I map out which pad the machine can actually sit level on before committing to an approach.
This is also when I ask about anything buried that 811 won't mark - a septic lateral running toward a drainfield lower on the slope, or low-voltage lighting wire along a terraced path, since those sit shallow and outside what the locate crew covers.
Why the visit doesn't end when the grinding stops
A ground stump throws roughly two to three times the chip volume most people expect, and on a slope that pile can either help or hurt depending on where it lands. Spread thin and even, grindings can slow water moving across bare ground where a root plate used to hold soil in place. Piled loose on a grade, the same material becomes exactly what a hard rain washes downhill first. I decide leave-versus-haul based on where the stump sits and which way the ground drains, not as a default either way, and I check the runoff path one more time before calling the job finished.
Step 1 — Site walk and grade assessment
Before anything comes off the trailer, I walk the driveway and the stump's location together, checking grade, turn radius, and whether the stump sits above or below a retaining wall. On a terraced lot I identify which level the machine can sit on safely. I also ask what's buried nearby that 811 won't flag, since irrigation and low-voltage lines on a slope tend to run shallower than code minimums assume.
Step 2 — Equipment staging on the grade
Once the approach is set, the machine gets positioned and chocked before the first cut, not after. On a climbing or curving driveway, that sometimes means walking a compact grinder in from a wider staging point rather than trying to back a trailer up the full length. Where a wall sits close by, I set a clearance line the machine doesn't cross regardless of how the grind is going.
Step 3 — The grind itself
Depth runs six to twelve inches below grade depending on what's planned for the spot afterward - deeper under anything that will bear weight, shallower where the area is simply being reclaimed as lawn. On a slope I work from the uphill side first when the position allows it, since that keeps the machine's weight working with gravity rather than against a wheel losing traction on loose fill.
Step 4 — Cleanup and slope check
Grindings get spread, mounded, or hauled based on where the stump sat and which way water moves across that ground - a decision made on site, not by default. Before leaving, I check the runoff path one more time, particularly on a hillside lot where a freshly bare root zone is the first thing a hard rain will test.
